Translating fun and irreverence into funds for a non-profit
Moustache Madness: Movember Emphasizes Fun, Not Guilt, To Raise Millions For Cancer Programs
In college, we had a no-shave January contest to see who could grow the thickest beard. It was fun seeing someone with really gnarly facial hair, although his girlfriend probably wasn’t too fond of it. (I couldn’t really grow anything on my face if I’d tried.)
What’s interesting about Movember is how they’ve steered clear of bleak and tear-jerking storytelling used by many charities and non-profits to raise money - I bet you’ve seen those feed a hungry child campaigns. It’s not that it’s a bad strategy because it’s working, but it’s interesting that capitalizing on fun and irreverence - instead of fear - helped Movember grow to become one of the biggest prostate funders in the world.
Fun and irreverence aside, what sets Movember apart from other charities is how they have created a passionate culture. It came down to this: It’s easy and simple to participate. It’s highly customizable. It’s inclusive of both sexes and different demographics.
And you know, if you grow that ridiculous mustache fo’ real, you’re perfectly in line with our hipster culture.
Movember was smart enough to organically build on top of an existing culture.
