The biggest enemy of manufacturing in the U.S. is the pseudo-knowledge that America is a bad place for manufacturing. This perception will keep manufacturing from happening and thereby ensure that the reality will fulfill the prophecy.
Former Intel chief, Andy Grove has some terse words to say about the state of American manufacturing in this MIT Technology Review interview. As he puts it, where’s the evidence that manufacturing in Asia really is so much cheaper? Instead, shouldn’t the American government embark on a vigorous marketing campaign to rebrand its own capabilities instead of simply accepting that manufacturing in the U.S. is dead, and thus accelerate the industry’s death spiral race to oblivion? But you see, manufacturing in China is growing to satisfy our lust for foreign imports and support our hyper-consumption pattern. As long as we rely on mass consumption to drive our economy, it would seem as if China is a better place for manufacturing.
What is we shift our behavior towards smart consumption? I bet we can manufacture products that benefits the Earth and society and that is where our opportunities lie. We need to earnestly start investing in technology and education that drive that growth. And that takes cooperation between citizens, companies, and government.
